MATA Launches Free Bus Pass Program for Community Organizations

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is committed to supporting the Memphis community by ensuring residents have access to reliable and affordable transportation, especially during times of economic hardship.

As many families and individuals face financial challenges due to job loss and rising living costs, public transit remains a vital lifeline—connecting people to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services.

To help address these needs, MATA has launched a new initiative that allows community organizations to request free bus passes through a simple online form available on our website. Each participating organization may receive up to 100 free bus passes to distribute directly to the individuals and families they serve.

This program builds on MATA’s ongoing efforts to make transit more accessible, equitable, and community-centered. By partnering with local organizations that are already supporting residents across Memphis, MATA aims to remove transportation barriers and help more people reach the opportunities they deserve.

As MATA launches the Zero Fare Pilot Program, we are temporarily pausing the distribution of free bus passes through community organizations. Under this pilot, fares are free across the entire MATA system, allowing all riders to travel at no cost during the evaluation period. This pause ensures our full focus remains on successfully implementing and assessing the Zero Fare initiative.
