MATA Activates Winter Weather Safety Plan

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its customers and employees as the region prepares for sever winter weather. Safety is our top priority during weather events that may create hazardous travel.

Service Adjustments: Thursday, February 5, 2026

MATA TO RETURN TO FULL FIXED - ROUTE SERVICE

MATA will return to full fixed-route and MATAPlus service on Thursday, February 5.

All transit centers will also resume normal operating hours that day.

Due to remaining snow and ice on some side streets, select routes will operate on detours from February 5 through February 8 to ensure safe bus operations.

MATA will expand  operations on Wednesday, February 4, adding additional snow routes as conditions gradually improve.

  • Route 32 is on detour in the north only///// BYPASS Overton Crossing, Hawkins Mill, Range Line. The detour is  (R) Watkins, (R) Sanit Elmo over regular route

Service will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be limited to the following snow routes:

  • Route 1 – Union
  • Route 2 – Madison
  • Route 7 – Shelby & Holmes – 69 Winchester
  • Route 8 – Chelsea & Highland
  • Route 11 – Frayser

MATA will expand snow route service on Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, 2026, and will continue snow route service on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., as road conditions allow.

MATA TO OPERATE LIMITED PARATRANSIT SERVICE TUESDAY

MATA will operate limited MATAPlus paratransit service beginning at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, for medical and dialysis patients only, weather and road conditions permitting.

Riders are strongly encouraged to confirm directly with their clinics that appointments will be open and operating as scheduled. If a clinic is closed, riders are asked to cancel their ride request to help ensure service availability for those with critical needs.

MATA will also continue to support transportation to warming centers as long as conditions remain reasonably safe for operations.

All other MATA services will remain suspended on Tuesday, January 27, including:

  • Fixed-route service
  • Groove On Demand
  • Ready!
  • Trolley

All MATA transit centers will remain closed.

MATA will suspend all transit services Monday, January 26, 2026 due to hazardous road conditions caused by the winter storm. All MATA transit centers will also be closed.

MATA will suspend all transit services Sunday, January 25, 2026 due to hazardous road conditions caused by the winter storm. All MATA transit centers will also be closed.

MATA will continue to support transportation to warming centers as long as conditions remain reasonably safe for operations.

  • People experiencing homelessness who need transportation to a warming center can contact the Hospitality Hub at 901-486-0939 to request a ride.
  • Residents who have experienced an electrical or water outage can contact the City of Memphis Office of Emergency Management at 901-636-2525 to arrange transportation to one of three 24-hour community centers operating as a warming center. (Ed Rice- 2935 North Watkins, Orange Mound CC- 2572 Park Ave or Hickory Hill CC – 3910 Ridgeway Rd)

MATA will remain in close coordination with the City of Memphis and emergency management partners and will share updates as conditions change. Protecting the safety of our riders and frontline team members comes first, and that commitment drives every decision we make.

 The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) will suspend all transit services at 4:00 p.m. today due to hazardous road conditions caused by winter weather.

All MATA transit centers will also close at 4:00 p.m.

While regular service is suspended, MATA will continue to support transportation to warming centers as long as conditions remain reasonably safe for operations.

Important transportation resources for the community:

  • People experiencing homelessness who need transportation to a warming center can contact the Hospitality Hub at 901-486-0939 to request a ride.
     
  • Residents who have experienced an electrical or water outage can contact the City of Memphis Office of Emergency Management at 901-636-2525 to arrange transportation to one of three 24-hour community centers operating as a warming center.

MATA will continue coordinating with the City of Memphis and emergency management partners and will provide updates as conditions change. The safety of MATA team members and the riding public is always our highest priority, and every operational decision is guided by that commitment.

We will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and coordinate with City and State officials to ensure informed decisions based on the latest road conditions and forecasts.

Fixed-Route Buses:

  • Saturday, Jan 24th: Service starts at 7AM ends at 6 PM.

MATA Plus:

  • Limited to essential access trips only. Operating from 5AM to 6PM
  • Assessment Center will be closed Saturday, with appointments rescheduled.

Trolley, Ready! On Demand & Groove On-Demand:

  • Service suspended Saturday, Jan 24th.

Transit Center Operations:

  • Transit Center Lobbies: Open from 7 AM to 7 PM.

The Hospitality Hub operates the City of Memphis' Emergency Warming Center during extreme cold weather, providing a place of safety and kindness for the unhoused population to shelter from dangerous conditions.  Please see the Hospitality Hub's Facebook and Instagram for the most updated details.

Warming Centers:

The City of Memphis’ Emergency Warming Centers will be open until further notice.

Transportation:

Transportation to warming centers is operated by MATA.  After 7PM, please call 901.489.0939 for transportation

Customers will be informed about service updates via the MATA website, Omnilert automated messages, social media, as well as news media.
